The Queen visits Margate
previous next

Queen Elizabeth II visited Margate on Friday 11th November and as you can see she went right past Margate Language Centre on her way to the new Turner Contemporary art gallery. As well as the gallery she visited a café in the town and met some of the people. Many of the Margate Language Centre students took the opportunity to join the crowds to greet her – a real bonus to their stay

Halloween Night Fun
Halloween Night Fun!

The Halloween night was really successful. A number of students came in superb fancy dress. They did a "catwalk" and introduced their character. The winner received the loudest cheers. We also decorated the bar area to look like a cavern with material, pumpkins the students had carved, a UV light and the art works from the art workshop (Halloween paper creations and origami) on a white sheet overhanging the UV light. Prizes were also given for the best pumpkin and best baked cake or biscuits which were shared amongst everyone. It was certainly a jovial atmosphere with about 30 students in total.

Sidney gets a well-deserved medal!
Sidney gets a well-deserved medal!

Sidney completed today in a leafy Hyde Park bathed in autumnal sunshine a 10 km run on behalf of the Stroke Association. And what a wonderful time of just 47 and a half minutes - not bad for a 10 year old wire-haired dachshund! In case there may be any sceptics out there you will see under the 10k results that Sid was running under his master’s name.

Watch the video in full size

By the way Adam also loves to run along Botany bay... but not quite as quickly as Jessica.

MLC teacher completes 120km cycle challenge
One of our staff, Ross Emans, has successfully completed a 120km cycle ride in aid of a local charity. Ross, who has worked for Margate Language Centre since 2008 as a manager and teacher, joined over 600 other cyclists in the Pilgrims Cycle Challenge last Sunday 8th May to raise money for the Pilgrims hospices in South East Kent. The hospices look after terminally ill patients in their final weeks and days to ensure that when they die, they are in as pleasant and comfortable an environment as possible. There are three Pilgrims Hospices - the original one was in Canterbury, named after the Pilgrims who travelled to Canterbury Cathedral in the Middle Ages from all over England to worship at the shrine of the murdered archbishop, Thomas Becket. The ride was between all three of the hospices. Ross started at the hospice in Ashford and rode to the one in Margate, and then on to Canterbury, before riding from Canterbury back to Ashford.

Following the ride, Ross said: "It was the first time I'd ridden such a long way in one day, so I was very pleased to complete it. Luckily the weather was good, and I didn't have any problems with my bike, and amazingly I didn't make any wrong turns!"

Come to Margate Language Centre ... and bring your horse!
When Aurelie, from Switzerland, decided to come to Margate Language Centre she had a very strange request: can I bring my horse too? We were happy to arrange for her horse to stay in stables nearby so that Aurelie could study with us and also ride her horse in her free time.

"I really like my teachers and Lee, the Academic Manager, is helping me with my exam. I am working hard! I am living near the sea and I enjoy speaking with my family. They are very helpful and I have made friends from all over the world. My best friend is Ja Hee. She comes from Korea. It is great living by the sea but I also go to Canterbury with my friends."

Police exchange at Margate Language Centre

The student on the left, an Italian military policeman who is currently stationed in Kabul in Afghanistan, decided to come to Margate Language Centre in November to improve his English for his job.

During his stay we were delighted to organise a meeting with a representative of Kent Police, Terry McCormick (right), who made a presentation of a Kent Police helmet. In return our student was delighted to present a Carabinieri cap to Terry.

This student is one of many Carabinieri officers who have studied at Margate Language Centre to boost their English before being stationed abroad.

Margate Language Centre is now a registered TOEIC test centre
Due to increasing demand for the TOEIC test, and to avoid our students having to travel to London in order to take the test, we have become a registered TOEIC test centre.

The TOEIC test measures proficiency in international business English. It is a worldwide standard for measuring English proficiency in the workplace. It has become a very popular way for companies to evaluate the current English level of their employees and therefore taking the exam can help students to access a wider job market.

We now offer the TOEIC test as a supplement to any course taken at Margate Language Centre.
